These are the must ingredients and their quantities for preparing Kashmiri yakhni.

  • 500 grams of chicken
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 medium-sized onion, thinly sliced
  • 4-5 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon fennel powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon Kashmiri red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala powder
  • Salt (to taste)
  • Fresh coriander leaves
  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil or ghee

How to make Kashmiri Yakhni:

Step 1:

First and foremost, heat two tablespoons of cooking oil or ghee over medium heat in a large pot. Then, add thinly sliced onions to the pot and sauté until they turn golden brown.

Step 2:

Add minced garlic and grated ginger to the pot and sauté for another minute. After that, add the chicken pieces to the pot and cook until lightly browned on all sides. Now, grab a separate bowl and whisk the yogurt until smooth. Gradually add the yoghurt to the pot, while stirring constantly.

Step 3:

Now, add turmeric powder, fennel powder, cumin powder, Kashmiri red chili powder, and salt to taste. Mix well to combine all the spices. Pour 3 cups of water into the pot and give it a good stir.

Step 4:

Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for about 45 minutes or until the chicken is tender and fully cooked. Once the chicken is cooked, sprinkle garam masala powder over the yakhni and stir it.

Step 5:

Finally, garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve it hot with steamed rice or naan.

That’s it! Just follow these steps, and you’ll have a flavorful Yakhni ready to enjoy with your meal.
